Jipyong Launches the Digital Forensics Practice Group and Signs MOU with Korea Digital Forensic Center

On March 17, Jipyong launched ‘the Digital Forensics Practice Group’ and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Digital Forensic Center. 
 
As technology advances, individuals and companies exchange important data on the internet on a daily basis, leaving such data records to be accumulated in cyberspace. It is no exaggeration to say that computer and mobile phone storages are encompassing almost every facet of the lives of individuals and companies. 
 
Unlike in the past when ‘paper documents’ were used as evidence in investigation and litigation, ‘digital data’ have become the most important evidence. This means that leveraging digital forensics which focuses on investigation of digital data is needed to solve legal issues. 
 
It is against this backdrop that Jipyong has launched ‘the Digital Forensics Practice Group,’ to provide clients with professional legal services related to digital forensics, and has signed an MOU on March 17, 2020 with the Korea Digital Forensic Center, the nation’s top digital forensics expert group, to continue to build on its expertise. 
 
‘Digital Forensics’ means a branch of forensic science that focuses on collection of digital data found in digital devices, such as computer log files, document files, e-mails, mobile phone texts, chat logs, etc., for investigation and recovery of data creation dates, existing data, and deleted data, for the purpose of identifying evidence. 
 
Korea Digital Forensic Center is established by CEO Choi Woon-young, who formerly served as a cybercrime investigator of the Korean National Police for 20 years. As one of the top institutions on a national level which pioneered the area of digital forensics, the center has wide-ranging experience in using technologies such as digital information management solutions and forensics accounting solutions for anti-corruption audits and investigations into confidential information leak, as well as investigating and recovering data storage devices of individuals and companies for evidence collection. 
 
Digital forensics has become increasingly important not only in criminal cases but also in corporate internal audits, accounting audits, and in regulatory compliance investigations of various administrative institutions related to fair trade and labor, etc. 
 
Jipyong’s Digital Forensics Practice is composed of a dedicated team of attorneys including Ja Sung OH, a former prosecutor specialized in criminal law and labor; Ki Seok JANG who focuses his practice on corporate crime; Seongcheol PARK who has particular experience in litigation in digital forensics matters and focuses on IT and real estate; Hyoung Woo KIM who focuses his practice on finance and corporate accounting, Jong HEO who has experience in IT and patent; Kye Kwan WI, a graduate of the Korea National Police University specialized in corporate crime and labor; and Jong Hun LEE who focuses his practice on fair trade. The Digital Forensics Practice Group will closely work with Jipyong’s other groups that have strengthened their skills in a wide range of areas including criminal defense, compliance, labor, fair trade, crisis management, and human rights management. 
 
Jipyong’s Digital Forensics Practice Group and Korea Digital Forensic Center will closely cooperate with each other to provide clients with advice regarding corporate internal audit, fair trade, unfair labor practice, technology leakage in more systematic and strategic manners. 
 
Specific work that Jipyong will routinely provide, in cooperation with Korea Digital Forensic Center, includes:

△ Investigation into huge quantities of digital documents and digital files 
△ Recovery and investigation of mobile phones and hard drives 
△ Recovery and investigation of audio, video, and multimedia files 
△ Recovery and investigation of various digital data storages 
△ Matters related to digital forensics techniques used in police investigations such as search and confiscation
